What are the legal consequences of injuring someone?  It depends on many factors.  How severe were the person’s injuries?  Was the injury accidental or intentional?  You can still be convicted of a crime for causing an accident that seriously injured someone else. For example, if you cause a car accident while driving drunk because it should have been obvious to you that your actions were endangering other people.  How seriously did you intend to injure the person?  Intentions can make the difference between criminal negligence, aggravated assault, and attempted murder.

Of course, your actions after the arrested matter, too.  If your criminal defense lawyer is able to negotiate a plea deal and you plead guilty, you will generally get a lighter sentence than if a jury finds you guilty at trial.  If you are facing criminal charges for assault or another violent crime, contact a Los Angeles violent crimes defense lawyer.

Adam Abdul-Jabbar Accepts Plea Deal After Attacking Neighbor

In the spring and summer of 2020, as the pandemic-related lockdown dragged on for weeks upon weeks, tempers flared in California and elsewhere.  On June 9, 2020, Adam Abdul-Jabbar and his neighbor Raymond Windsor quarreled about trash cans, which were a frequent source of conflict between them.  Abdul-Jabbar, 28, attacked Windsor, 60, with a hunting knife, stabbing him in the head, neck, back, and side.  Windsor attempted to transport himself to the hospital; he collapsed outside the emergency room entrance and nearly died from blood loss.

According to Abdul-Jabbar’s lawyer, Abdul-Jabbar called 911 immediately after the attack and told the police the truth about what happened.  He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a dirk or dagger.  His charges carried a sentencing enhancement because of the severity of Windsor’s injuries.  He could have faced a sentence of up to nine years in prison, but his lawyer negotiated a plea deal with the prosecution.  Abdul-Jabbar agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of 180 days of home confinement followed by two years of probation.

In November 2021, the judge handed down a sentence of 180 days in jail; Abdul-Jabbar has the option to apply to serve his jail time as home confinement.  A hearing about the issue of home confinement will take place in January.  Adam Abdul-Jabbar is the son of NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but you do not need to have a famous father to get a plea deal that lets you avoid jail.  All defendants in criminal defense cases have the right to representation by a lawyer.
